The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team had three individual champions at the Wasps Women's Open on Friday.

EMORY, Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team had three individual champions at the Wasps Women's Open on Friday.

In the 145-lb bracket, sophomore Amber Hunter-Snyder took a high-scoring 14-7 decision in her opening round before securing a pinfall in the semifinals to get to the championship. She had a fairly comfortable 6-1 lead after the first period, however had to hold off a late comeback attempt late on in emerging with a 10-8 decision for the title.

Junior Maria Hiles also went unbeaten at 180, starting her day out with a pin, followed by a 5-0 decision and back-to-back tech falls in winning her class. At 110 lbs, freshman Kenaya Mwehu overcame a first bout loss to secure three consecutive victories, including two by tech fall, to be crowned the weight's champion.

Freshman Morgan Layman came close to securing a fourth championship for FSU, earning a 17-7 tech fall in the semifinals before coming up just shy 4-4 and losing out on a tiebreaker point in the title bout.

During the 160-lb bracket, three different Bobcats had first round wins, with freshmen Reise Roach, Naria Medrano, and Chaniah Bernier winning by decision, tech fall, and pinfall, respectively. Roach and Bernier would then both take tech falls to advance to the semifinals, however both would lose out on a shot at the championship. Despite falling in the quarterfinals, Medrano would recover to take a tech fall and pin before defeating Roach in the consolation bracket, earning herself third place overall.

Frostburg will return to action for a neutral site dual against Presbyterian on Friday, December 19 at 3:30 PM from Newark, Del. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
