Late Offense Pushes Baseball In Front of Shippensburg for Midweek Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team came alive in the middle of the game to take their nine-inning contest over Shippensburg on Tuesday with a final of 11-3.

Junior Joe Pippin was awarded the start in Frostburg's midweek game, giving up a single in his first outing but recording a strikeout right after to end the half inning with the Raider stranded on base.  The Bobcats loaded the bases in their first at-bats after two walks and sophomore Ryan Bouma was hit by a pitch, but FSU was unable to do any damage, leaving the game scoreless after one.  Pippin saw the same scenario in the top of the second with Shippensburg getting another single, but the righty left the runner on once more after two straight outs.  Frostburg went 1-2-3 at the plate to wrap up the second still with no runs on the board for either team.

SU hit into a lineout double play to end the top half of the third, with Pippin dealing another K.  Redshirt freshman CJ Carmichael knocked the first hit of the game for FSU with a single to left in the bottom of the inning, stealing second then as well, but was also left on base.  Another double play ended the start of the fourth, as junior Jake Holler roped a single to left field to lead off the bottom of the inning, advancing to second after senior Doyle McNew was walked.  Junior Kade Abrisz was then given the first RBI of the day for either squad, knocking in Holler with a single for a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth.

The Raiders belted two hits in the fifth to answer, scoring a run as well to tie the game at 1-1.  Shippensburg changed pitchers to start off the bottom of the inning, as Carmichael led off the outing with a double, coming around to score off an RBI single from Guy to put the Bobcats back in front 2-1.  Guy stole second, putting him in position to score off an RBI single from McNew, as the latter advanced to second on the throw.  Redshirt sophomore Tiernan Daly came in to pinch run for McNew, stealing third right away before coming home off an RBI single from Abrisz.  FSU kept things going as back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Frostburg, as a two-RBI single through the ride right from sophomore Jackson Schalick added two more runs to the Bobcats total to put their advantage at 6-1 after five.

Senior Ryan Adams took over on the mound to open the sixth, as SU got one run back before sophomore Bryce Hendricks was called to come in, getting one out after the Raiders scored another to bring the game to 6-3.  Bouma was hit by a pitch to become the first base runner of the sixth for Frostburg, moving to second off another single from Holler.  With two on, redshirt junior Ben Wieman roped a double to left to bring in one, as a bases clearing double then from freshman Manny Hall sat the score at 9-1.  Sophomore Brian Scott then laid down a perfect bunt, making it to first on an error by the pitcher, allowing Hall to move from second to home to put the score at 10-3.

Hendricks put two on for SU in the top of the seventh but coughed up a double play from the Raiders to end the half inning.  FSU went quick at the plate in the bottom of the sevent, as sophomore Jack Ray came in to throw in the eighth, tossing the first 1-2-3 inning of the day for the Bobcats.  Holler and Abrisz were both hit by a pitch in the bottom half of the inning, with senior Christian Shertzer coming in to pinch run for the former, crossing home plate on a wild pitch.  Redshirt senior Nate Vermillion took the bump to throw the top of the ninth for Frostburg, leaving one on to seal the 11-3 victory for the Bobcats.

Carmichael, Holler, and Abrisz all recorded a pair of hits on the day, scoring four total runs combined while the latter was credited with two RBI.  Six other Bobcats saw one knock in the outing, with Hall scoring a pair of runs and seeing two RBI as well.  Pippin was given the win for his seventh of the year, going five solid innings for six hits, one run, one walk, and three strikeouts.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 32-13 on the season, while Shippensburg falls to 25-20.  The Bobcats remain at home for their next game, kicking off their four-game series with Fairmont State on Friday, May 2 at 1 PM where it will be Senior Day.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
